Besides its symbology, the skull is the fundamental piece of all portraiture. Studying it always helps me understand the face, our features, and how to represent the human face accurately. Every portrait artist has a core understanding of the skull. With this understanding, we can drape life over it, find a person, and tell their story. Studies like this will always be a part of my practice, and I enjoy the open-ended question of who this was, what they did, and that every face I ever draw has some unique version of this underneath the surface.
